"Real men change nappies"

The purpose of this study was to examine in which way paternity was constructed in Sweden’s largest parenting magazine Vi Föräldrar and also what constructions were made regarding gender equality in these presentations. The method content analysis was applied to explore how paternity was presented in 18 numbers from 2015-2016 of Vi Föräldrar. By applying theories, a framework was created from which these constructions could be understood. The theories implemented were Yvonne Hirdmans theory about gender and Raewyn Connells theory about masculinities. The notion of homosociality and social constructionism was also implemented. The themes distinguished were the new father and fatherhood - the faces of (in)equality. The results revealed a father in alteration with new characteristics such as being emotional, attentive and also desirable and trendy. The father was more present in domesticity but always by choice and choosing which activities to participate in. There were signs of distinctive homosociality in the shape of need for mainly closeness and approval that strengthened the traditional gender roles. A gender equality discourse was distinguished which stood in contrast to the fact that traditional gender roles still played a big part in the heterosexual parenthood. The men gained, by giving them space both in the family and the labour market.
